10 ~ Origins in the 20th Century
Stories of our ancestors and the people who tried to unravel the mystery of their past in the last century.
The
final tale in the River Ape series ends 7 million years of evolution and brings
us right up to the present generation today.
Through the eyes of my familys ancestors we re-live the events that shaped the most remarkable 100 years in human history: The two world wars, the rise and fall of Communism and the amazing advances in technology and medicine. At the same time, following on from the last story, we plot how the understanding of human origins developed in the years after Charles Darwin. Well learn what our ancestors might have thought about it all. Early on, two scientists each came up with a different idea about human ancestry. Raymond Dart campaigned loudly for his savannah-living killer ape idea for 20 years and eventually it was accepted. The other, Alister Hardy, kept quiet his crazy-sounding idea that humans had a more watery past. As the century passed by and events shape our immediate ancestors lives, we see how progress in science and technology affected every aspect of life apart from the understanding of our past, which seemed to have reached a bottle-neck. The future? Only time will tell. |
